This is the video for "Steve McQueen", by M83. The video is cooler, and, well, because Steve McQueen. Despite their hipster following, I really like their stuff. Does something immediately lose all merit if hipsters like it? Or does it lose all merit if it's only reason is to cater to hipsters?
This is my deep anti-hipster philosophical dilemma. While hipsters can have good ideas and be well-intended, the majority are smug, self-sufficing jackweeds who get off on what they see as esoteric cultural cachet. Does this make them totally irredeemable, or can they overcome the stereotypes they have put forth?

You're only a hipster if you do things because you want people to think you're cool. Hipsters are worried about self image, so just like things because you like them and not because of what other people think and you'll never be a hipster.

M83 is a french group with a huuuuuge fanbase in Europe. I don't think they exist merely to cater to hipsters as you say.
Besides, who gives a shit what hipsters listen to? Just enjoy the music that you like to listen to.
Several bands that I love have received the hipster label. I could care less. It's not like I go out and intentionally looking for obscure music. if something comes up on Pandora or Slacker and I like it, it gets downloaded.

Couleurs used to be my s/n on so many websites.
...I was so hip.
Edit: I think Grave Yard Girl has gotten more of my friends into M83 than anything else. When I explain that album as a John Hughes movie through song, people perk up. Brilliant work.

I love M83, and before I could drive I'd imagine cruising around listening to them. When I was back in college I had the pleasure of seeing The Naked and Famous in concert, and I would absolutely recommend them in the same shoegaze-y genre. My ideal concert would probably have them both.

For me it was hearing * and Teen Angst... Before the Dawn was such an amazing album, and then Saturday's just knocked them to the next level... Hurry Up is really good, but it's got one albums worth of OUTSTANDING material and then another discs worth of stuff I'm glad they included.
Teen Angst though... man... it will NEVER get old.

I think it was those exact songs for me, as well as In Church from "Dead Cities...":. I had them on an old, old MP3 player and thought I had lost it, only to find it again my freshman year of college. It was a goldmine. I had completely forgotten about them and my roommate - who was studying music business - became hooked. Many summers were spent on the back porch blasting these albums.
And now I'm getting nostalgic sitting in a dark office. :(

Well, they've been catering to the crowd recently, but I think they were pretty cool even before "Midnight City". If you want a hipster band, check out the ones that hipsters swear by because it makes them look cool.

I have wanted to see them live since the first time I heard them! If M83, Phoenix, and Passion Pit played a show...

Ugh, like Neutral Milk Hotel? Sorry, depressing music is too depressing.

M83, Phoenix, and Passion Pit are my trifecta.

That really is the best philosophy. I don't think any band could be inherently hipster, they just get co-opted by hipster douches.

Ugh, I don't even care about the stuff Pitchfork says anymore. Then again, I do listen to Tame Impala...

I worried for a minute when I picked up Bon Iver... but then I remembered my bicycles have many gears, I have no facial hair, and I don't use an old Polariod camera in an ironic way. So I'm good.
But maybe I'm not. Talking shit about hipsters is a favorite hobby of ... hipsters.

You're okay for now. The instance you have a craving for Blue Ribbon I'll help you out of it. You're not the ironic man you think you are. There is no shame.

That's right. There is a simple math equation for PBR. if A stands in for the acceptable price for cheap beers, then it is okay to drink PBR if A<$5/Pitcher.

Excellent! I'll use this later in my life, unlike most of math class!
